Building Convincing Virtual Worlds: The Use of IP in Games
The devil is in the details. Developers strive to create the most evocative and detailed environments possible. For example, what contemporary warfare be without the names and logos of special forces units? But these details when, as they so often are, grounded in real-world products, locations and personalities, can (and do) pose complex legal issues. This lecture will examine recent developments in video game related intellectual property law, focusing on using trademarks, copyrights and celebrities to build convincing and realistic worlds, and the legal issues involved. Using high-profile case examples, Marc will discuss the critical considerations that development and production teams should be aware of, including the practical application of recent developments in copyright, trademark and right of publicity law. Marc will explain how courts' decisions are shaping the way developers make their games.
