Session Name:

Making Full Use of Orchestral Colors in Interactive Music

Overview:

The way an orchestra is used is as important to the perception of a piece of music as melody and harmony. This talk looks at the ways orchestration is (and has been) used in linear music and how interactive layering often makes these approaches unusable in games. It will cover some alternative approaches that allow for effective use of the orchestra and all the musical colors at its disposal. It will also look at the effect of these approaches on recording and mixing, and propose some viable solutions. The talk will cover an introduction to the art and craft of orchestration, an analysis of the way the orchestra is used in Holst's Planets Suite, and approaches to score and part preparation for interactive recording sessions.
