Games as Medicine: FDA Clearance Tradeoffs

Overview:

In early 2018, for the first time, software is expected to be cleared by the FDA to be prescribed by doctors to treat children with ADHD, opening the $300 billion annual US pharmaceutical market to game developers. Two other game-related treatments have already received FDA device clearance, a different type of clearance, and AR & VR creators are increasingly interested in this concept. In this talk, you can learn specifics of three companies that have applied to get their (non-XR) games reviewed in FDA trials, hear the business, technical, creative, and scientific challenges involved in creating and testing this sort of game, and other opportunities for games as medicine that are opening in the near future. This talk will also focus on why many XR-based Games for Health have not yet gotten FDA clearance, and possible solutions for this going forward. FDA review of software as treatment opens new markets for developers and provides positive news about the benefits of games, but also exposes them to more scrutiny. Come hear how to effectively deal with these opportunities and challenges.
