Session Name:

Adopting the Hollywood Production Model: How Revolution Reinvented Itself and Broken Sword for the App Age

Overview:

Under the traditional publisher recoupment model, Revolution created some of Europe’s most successful adventure games, including Beneath a Steel Sky, and the Broken Sword series which has earned over €100M at retail. Five years ago, in an incredibly hostile environment for independent developers, Revolution had to close their offices and shed all their staff to survive. Charles Cecil, Revolution’s CEO and designer of Broken Sword, will explain how Revolution has successfully re-invented both itself, and its adventure brands. How Revolution has adapted by employing a low overhead ‘Hollywood Model’ with very few employees and ultra low overhead, and leveraged its existing fan base to successfully self publish its games. Broken Sword: Director’s Cut has since achieved multi-million downloads on iOS. Charles will talk about the journey - what went right, and wrong, what opportunities were grasped and what were lost, and how the company sees the future.
